URL on a prim … kinda.

I was excited a few years ago when the lindens were talking about uBrowser. It was there experiment to viewing interactive web pages on animated 3D surfaces (such as a rippling cube). It has been a while since then and parts of the 3D browser have started to slowly make there way into SL. Today I went through and updated my client. One feature I saw on my parcels land was to use web content. I rezzed a few objects and watched my web page show up on them. I even made one out of a sculpty. It has some interesting possabilities.Eventually I hope to use llSetPrimURL to script this without requiring media for custom message boards.

  1. Now you just be careful with those parameters! You know what Gwyneth L discovered! :-)

I was – and am – hoping for more. This is a small, though welcome, step.

  2. Banana Stein says:

Which client are you using ?
    Banana

    AND what happend to Gwyneth?

  3. I’ll have to check out Gwyneth to see what she said. I’m just using the release candidate. I can’t wait until we can actually interact with these web pages on a prim. I’d love to be able to move the scroll bars, enter text in forms, and click links.

  4. [...] Dedric Mauriac’s blog tonight and saw a write up on url on a prim in Second Life. Thanks to Dedric or I would have missed this [...]

  5. Who fetches the pages? Your local viewer, or one of the LL servers? In my RL job geotargeting is quite an issue – we might run into the same with URL-on-a-prim.

  6. You can already geotarget people regardless of URL on a prim.

  7. The RC did break a few things Gwyneth found a way to crash a sim with it, and I found that it breaks some uses of llParcelMediaCommandList.
I’m not sure about Gwyneth, but Qarl has a fix ready already for the issue I found.

Qarl also pointed me to lsl_guide.html (distributed with the client) and the LSL wiki has also been updated with new LSL for using this new functionality (though it does still require use of the parcel media)

  8. If they are going to keep web pages with parcel media, that seems kinda kludgey to me. I would rather have it as a separate control so that we can still have videos playing separate from web pages.

  9. I’m not talking about geotargeting avatars, but about the URL-prim not showing what you expect it to show due to geotargeting issues.

The the pages would be centrally fetched, then both the developer and the watcher would see exactly the same. However I assume the URL gets fetched locally, and that migh (will) lead to all sorts of side effects.

So, how do you geotarget avatars?
